Due to strict government regulations, a smaller group than ever of professional fishermen is active on the IJsselmeer. 100 years ago the port of Volendam had above 1000 active boats, now there are only 3. Each fishing village around the IJsselmeer has only a few left. The most important cultural aspect in the fishing villages is in danger of disappearing. Without the entourage of fishing, these villages are nothing special.
